If I was rating these as stories written today, I'd probably give them 1 star - they get an extra star because I appreciate they were written in a different time and for a very different audience to the kids of today. I didn't like Alice. She strikes me as not much more than a well spoken brat. I don't think any other character hung around long enough to be likeable. If I were to think up every strange character I could possibly imagine and just list them, I'd have written a sequel. I found myself skipping paragraphs just to get something to happen... and to get it over with. It's a real shame, because I so wanted to enjoy them. It just wasn't to be.
